How to Draw

Below you’ll find several ideas for how to draw (and paint!) dandelions. Simple lines can look so pretty!

This How to Draw a Dandelion tutorial shows how striking line drawings can be, when they are kept to just a few simple shapes. A very pretty dandelion can be drawn with just a stem, round center and lots of feathery seeds.

To make this simple dandelion painting, start by drawing a stem and the thin little lines of the puffball with a permanent black marker on watercolor paper. Next, use rubber cement to paint a round shape over the top of the puffball, then let it dry completely. Brush clean water over the paper, then place strips of blue and green bleeding tissue paper on the wet surface, overlapping them as you go. Brush more water on top until the tissue paper is fully saturated, then let the color transfer before removing the paper. After everything dries, gently rub off the rubber cement to reveal a bright white dandelion shape underneath.

Dandelions are a symbol for healing, whether from emotional or physical pain, and also surviving hard times as dandelions are the most persistent flower that never gives up. When you give someone a single dandelion or a bouquet, you’re giving a message of hope, telling the recipient to not give up and to persevere to sunnier times ahead.
