Here you’ll find an easy step-by-step tutorial here for how to draw a Terrarium. Drawing plants with their root system can be educational and pretty!
Terrarium Painting
Here’s a fun painting project that’s perfect for blending art with your plant studies. With a couple of simple “helpers” (like a jar template to trace), even kindergarteners can successfully draw and paint a terrarium—no tiny-hand frustration required.
This was always a teacher favorite back when I was in the classroom, and I’ve found it works just as well with kinders as it does with fifth graders—if you set students up for success from the start. Three things make all the difference:
1) Use watercolor paper.
It holds up to paint better and helps colors look brighter instead of muddy.
2) Provide a sturdy jar template for tracing.
A chipboard template gives everyone a confident, quick start and keeps the focus on the fun part: designing what goes inside.
3) Choose liquid watercolors.
They’re vibrant and ready to go, so students can concentrate on painting rather than figuring out the “right” amount of water.
One quick tip before you dive in: test your crayon-and-paint combination first. Some watercolor brands (especially certain pans) can sit on top of crayon and cover it instead of letting that crisp white resist line show through. It’s a bummer to discover that at the very end—especially for a six-year-old who’s counting on those magical white lines to appear.
A quick test swatch ahead of time can save the day—and make sure the finished terrariums look as bright and satisfying as they should.
