Here you’ll find an easy step-by-step tutorial video for a Rene Magritte for Kids Art Project and a Magritte Coloring Page.

This René Magritte for Kids art project is a fun way for students to recreate one of his most famous ideas—and then make it their own. The painting starts with a simple face, but the twist is that students get to hide it with an object of their choice.

They can invent anything they want to place in front of the blank face: an apple, a flower, a book, a slice of pizza, a soccer ball—anything that feels surprising or interesting. Students may draw their object directly onto the paper, or they can draw it on a separate sheet, cut it out, and attach it afterward for a little collage-style dimension.

About René Magritte

René Magritte (1898–1967) was a Belgian Surrealist artist known for making images that feel realistic at first… but quickly turn into clever visual puzzles. His paintings often make you stop and think, “Wait—how can that be?”

Magritte studied art in Brussels, Belgium, and like many artists, he worked a few different jobs early on to support himself—including designing wallpaper and making ads for fashion.

What Magritte Loved to Paint

Magritte returned to certain subjects again and again. He painted men in suits and bowler hats, big blue skies filled with clouds, ocean views, and scenes with windows and doors. He also liked very ordinary objects—pipes, apples, eggs, birds, and more.

The interesting part is what he did with those ordinary things. Instead of showing them in their usual places, Magritte would put them somewhere unexpected. A familiar object might appear too large, floating in the air, or blocking something important. That surprising “mix-up” is what makes his work feel mysterious and unforgettable—and it’s exactly the kind of creative thinking students can explore in this project.
