She covered a wide range of subject matter in her career (with over 2000 paintings) but is perhaps most famous for her giant flower paintings. Rather than have students draw a flower the way they usually do, this tutorial will show them how to draw a poppy that is large, and a kind of 3/4 view, with some petals that even go off the page.

DRAWING PAPER
Pacon Drawing Paper, White, Standard Weight, 9″ x 12″, 500 Sheets
OOLY BEESWAX CRAYONS
Ooly, Natural Beeswax Crayons, Set of 24. Made from non-toxic ingredients for ages 3 and up.
SHARPIE MARKERS
Fine Point, permanent black ink marks on paper, plastic, metal, and most other surfaces.
Directions
Time needed: 45 minutes
Step by step directions to draw like Georgia O’Keeffe

Draw a cup shape for the base of the flower.

Add a small petal, make it droop on the right.

Draw a petal on the left that is standing up.

Add a petal on the right, to kind of balance out the left one. Note the smooth and bumpy sides.

Draw another petal that is sitting in the middle.

Add a bumpy and zig zag line for the center.

Draw final petal on the left, going off the page.

Add a petal on the right, also going off the page. Include lines for the dark center color.

Trace with a marker and color, preferably with oil pastels or whatever makes the brightest red.
